Yes, indeed I have had fun, and learnt a lot along the way. I realise that this program has taken an extensive amount of time to complete and most of this has been done in my (and other library staff's across Victoria's) own time; but I think in this day and age we have to be prepared to give and take and make the effort to step out of our comfort zones and take the time to look at the fascinating technology there is available to us out there.

On behalf of the Corangamite Regional Library Corporation thank you to all stakeholders involved with the implementation of this program which has provided us with such valuable learning opportunities.

I enjoyed taking time out to work, rest & play!

Sal's World (signing off for now ~ but I'll be back!)

The end is in sight (Audio Books)

Yes.....indeed the end is in sight....but there is still a little way to go....

So let's chat about Audio Books / e-books....

Initially I had some difficulty with loading software on to my home computer....both for podcasts and audio books.....but upon persevering I made it and have been happy listening to e-books ever since (not to mention music and various other information available to me on podcasts - but that was the last exercise).

I have found the World Ebook Fair site incredible and have added it and tagged several other sites in delicious. I listened to The Emperor's New Clothes (which I had a colouring book of as a child), The tales of Peter Rabbit - just for fun, and The Brother Grimms "The Mouse, the Bird and the sausage (beware of wanting.....is all I can say - and if you're a sausage beware of the Dog!)

I haven't signed up on this occasion but I think it may well be worth my while in the future hence adding links to delicious.

Podcasts

The potential benefits for libraries incorporating podcasts into our service provision are many. Podcasts can obviously be a great way to communicate information to our library users. Users are able to save content digitally; they can then take this information away on their portable application and listen to it at their convenience.

Some examples I have looked at within the Yahoo Directory show that podcasts can provide a medium for children and adults alike to be able to share their opinions and ideas about their favorite books, inform others of upcoming programs and events, and be able to deliver it all to a wide audience in a convenient and inexpensive way. Podcasts can assist library staff as it helps us keep in touch with people in our communites who engage in the use of futuristic technology. Podcasting is a hit among young people and provides them with the opportunity to practice digital recording, mixing and mastering skills.

Podcasts are for everyone - you just have to look around you on trains, watch people out walking, those with car hand's free connections that listen while they drive......

Now let's see if I'm clever enough to be able to attach one to my blog?

Visit the podcast blog!

mmm.....not quite?......but I now have Gilford Public Library's Podcasts added to my Bloglines Feeds... and I am sure there are still more reasons for their introduction and usage in our libraries.

Medieval helpdesk with English subtitles on You Tube

Mere Male

You have to laugh! Some things never change!

Trust You Tube to point out that you first need to look at the manual.....what manual? No-one reads the manual....and if you actually can, as they pointed out you're doing extremely well! Lol.

I personally think You Tube is great! Being a relatively new user I am just blown away by the amount of videos, songs, cartoons, adds, anything people can think of possibly taping, recording both from the past and now into the future....

The site is user friendly, it could provide an opportunity for staff to be able to record training sessions and have them available to other members through You Tube; we could use it to promote events for the community, eg. record a book launch or a program and have it available from our website for members and potential new members to further explore! Uses for this program are endless and it's really easy to use. It offers the Best of Both Worlds!

Crazy about Web 2.0 Tools

Believe me....both on a personal and professional note I have found a lot of sites that interest me between those listed in the Award winners, of which we have already been introduced to ~ Technorati, Rollyo, and Library Thing (see links already available to the right) in conjunction with what's available in the Web2.0 directory.....Songza and Who's off? just to wet the appetite and lots lots more to further explore......I'm excited! It's going to be a very organised new year!.....

Hey why wait til then.....let's get this party started!

http://www.go2web20.net/

To the right you will also see a Google map. I had heard of Google Maps but hadn't played with this program before. I am most impressed with the satellite maps and imagery; the directions provided are very good (accurate) and I was able to find my way quite easily from Colac to Lavers Hill....which I thought may have been a big ask? Travelmate has trouble working out some of the roads around Barongarook and Colac....Navman seems to have a fair idea.....how technology is continually developing...

It is great to be able to travel around the world from home! Restaurants, hotels, buildings of interest, flights around the country...the information available is infinite....

I best get my travelling shoes on...there's a lot to see and only one lifetime to do it in....

Thanks Google Maps for broadening my horizons (I think....could prove expensive mmm....)

See you out there!

Library 2.0

Library 2.0 uses concepts of Web 2.0. Libraries of the future will both look and feel very different to both the staff and the people. Libraries (library staff) more than ever before need to collaborate and share their resources and experiences in whatever form this may take ~ physical or electronic.

We need to be one step ahead of all those icebergs (the potential disasters) that lie, quietly waiting for us ahead! We need to reassess our practices and attitudes (take a long hard look at ourselves). We no longer need to collect resources 'just in case'....we need to meet the 'just in time' deadlines. We will not necessarily even need to collect in the traditional sense take LibraryThing for example.

'Open your mind' - The World (Web) is your Oyster....given today's climate; the current and emerging technologies available. For this to evolve effectively we need to work toward elimination of any barriers that may come between our patrons and the information they are seeking. Therefore we need to be leading the way - finding new ways to bring such services to our customers both physically and virtually (especially virtually) and integrate our services into work, study and play. We are in the midst of a 'shift'...exploring new directions....

Come and explore with me........

A Whole New World

Technorati

Mmmmm....I really feel like I have my training wheels on...lol...

An endless world of blogs and sights to further explore......

I even ended back up in Flikr and found another frog.....looking somewhat puzzled and in awe like me.....

I haven't claimed anything as yet but I am set up to be able to do so and inadvertently I set up a watchlist!

It's getting late so I will have look at tagging soon.

Good night for now.....

A few days later....and I have worked out to claim and how to add UTube clips. I really found this clip inspirational and the music is not bad either! Enjoy, Play, Learn!

Mmmm......now let me think about this very carefully.....

Can I see a potential use for this search engine?

Would you like to stay at a hotel that has a spa right here? Check out Rollyo ~ Sal's Travel Tips and you may well find this location in QLD.....

Way to good to be true!

I think I've found at least one use for this site.....

Enjoy........

My Library

Well now let the fun really begin....a true librarian's dream!!

From the age of 3 onward? I believe I have been trying to classify my book collection....Mum often tells of how I used to line my books up in order of tallest to smallest....mmm; not quite as Dewey would have wanted it...in fact he would have been turning sommersaults in his grave no doubt...

Then I undertook some work with the Kawarren Primary School as I loved helping make collections orderly....

Mr Sluggett from the Ozzie Otway Van was my inspiration...and don't forget My Lockey..

I can remember the days of studying at Colac Branch and thinking how great it was, but was alittle surprised some years later commencing work there that the colour scheme had not changed a great deal...

The building is still the same....but at least we've made progress with the collections and some of the interior furnishings.....

Feeds are US; Feeds are Fun!!

Am I impressed or what!!

Gone are the days of being inundated by copius e-mails and spam....subscribe to who you want when you want and have all your contacts in one spot....

What more could a girl/librarian ask for.....

All roads lead to Rome.....

When in Rome do as the Romans do!!

I will and I'll love it! (Just don't do it to the frog!)

I'm so excited and I just can't hide it.......

I can remember having a most sincere conversation with my father while choosing my subjects for Year 11...."Mmm....computers" he said...."no I don't need to study computers...." I quickly replied; of course I was thinking more along the lines of programming and the likes but of course my Dad was onto it.....

In years 11 and 12 I typed the majority of my assessments up on my 'much treasured' electric typewriter (which I still have today and have used recently at work for labelling files in my filing cabinet.....not just for the shock factor..hee...hee!"; a look of terror crossed my CEO's face ... "We don't still own one of those do we?".... "No" I grinned "but I do!"

When I went on to Uni of course the progression started...first apple macs, then IBM, then further down the road to my career I became immersed in Windows 98 (Notepad, Write)....the Internet (surf's up!! ~ Internet explorer, Netscape, Anzwers, Web Wombat).....Y2K ("am I ever gonna see your face again?).......Windows 2000 (Word, Excel)....(Eudora).......Windows XP (Microsoft Outlook, Access, Publisher)......Vista.....

What's next??? Blogs, Wikis, Mp3, Ipods, (forgot mobile phones....the best!)....Flickr....Virtual Libraries.....tomorrow the world....

Mental note to self......always 'listen' to our elders, the decision is ultimately ours, but their opinions and life experience are very precious.....as is modern technology!!
Creating my own mobile phone froggy wallpaper..

Who would have thought it possible.....

What a way to spend a lazy Sunday morning....

Basking in the sun....watching the days of October pass us by

As I like changing my desktop at work at least monthly I think this option within flickr will suit me just fine and I also like the captions option....

Day 2

Well it's taken a wee while to get back to it.....but yes.....I have decided this is definitely fun!! As you can tell I have yet another little green interest and that is of the froggy kind.

I grew up on a farm and have always loved Spring....this is when the tadpoles come out to play....I used to love going down to the dam to fill one of Mum's preserving jars with tadpoles and take them to School for morning talk and then we would watch them grow....

I loved the Muppet Show..Kermie and Miss Piggy....

And then somehow all my friends realised that I was a froggy kind of girl and I now have quite a collection of little green froggy friends of the ornament kind....kinda nice really....not as fond of toads I must add....always thought they'd give you warts....that was the wives tale!

Well its ribbit from me.....or was that "read it" (in true ribbit fashion!)

Night Night.....

Day 1

Hi,

I'm currently having a week off work and learning how to Blog....

I've decided that it may well be fun....and that lots of people in the world share some of my interests and hobbies.

Well it's almost the weekend and I'm excited 'cause the Pies are going to give those Pussy Cats a run for their money tonight.....(I'm being a bit bold I know...)

Hope you are all having a great day...and that you have lots of fun on the weekend....

Enjoy
